Pitt State options for being active

Pittsburg State University offers more than 150 clubs, organizations, and groups that students can join based on special interests, academics, and service.

Among that list is also club sports which are available to all Pitt State students.

Mauresa Caire, senior manufacturing engineering major and President of Women’s Rugby, said that the women’s rugby team is excited to play in the fall after limited opportunities to play last fall and spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“…As of right now, everything is in full motion,” Caire said. “We kind of got a rough idea of our schedule but we have yet to confirm that so I’m not quite sure yet. But we will be playing in our conference.”

The Women’s Rugby Club will begin holding regular practices during the first week of the fall 2021 semester.

“…There’s no requirements, no experience required especially,” Caire said. “We are more than… (happy) to teach anybody who is willing to come out and give it a shot. It can be really intimidating at first but we welcome anybody and everybody and we love having new people come out.”

Owen Gray, junior in history/government, is the President of Men’s Rugby. According to Gray, the Men’s Rugby team has already started scheduling matchups with other university rugby teams.

“…We’re having a full conference schedule with our conference tournament… (the) weekend of Halloween,” Gray said. “We’re still going to do all of the same traveling (this fall)… We should have our home opener on Sept. 11.”

The Men’s Rugby Club, also known as Gorillahead Rugby, will begin their 50th season in the fall semester. The club is currently selling t-shirts, which are $15, and hoodies, which are $25. Checks and cash can be delivered to 103 Howard Street in Diamond, Mo. Venmo payments can be sent to @OwenGray54. Orders that need to be shipped will require an additional $3.

Pittsburg State also has other club sports.

Club Baseball won the Dll National Championships against the Air Force Falcons (7-0) in May of 2019, the last time the championship was held after experiencing interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other active organizations include Futbol (Soccer) Club, Gorilla Ultimate Frisbee Club, Pitt State Club Golf Team, Pittsburg Cricket Club, and Pittsburg State University Women’s Club Volleyball.

To join a club sport, students can go online to Gorilla Engage.
