Pitt State softball is off to another impressive start this year, as they sit at 9-0 on the season after sweeping the competition at the Southern Colorado Crossover. Pitt State went 5-0 at the competition, winning big and coming away with some tight wins against tough opponents.
The Gorillas began the tournament with a statement win over Colorado Springs, winning 16-6 in just five innings. The 16 runs scored by Pitt State are tied for the eighth most in a game in program history. Graduate student Kadyn Trochim, junior Haili Igou and senior Kyleigh Lamont hit consecutive home runs in a 10-run first inning, and as a trio, accounted for 11 of the 16 runs scored by the Gorillas. Lamont led all players going 4-of-5 with four runs driven in. Trochim led the team with three runs scored as Igou and junior Rachael Schlotter each finished with three RBI. In the circle, junior Emma Crabb (2-0) struck out two in 4.2 innings of relief and was credited with the win.
Pitt State would then pivot to play Adams State University that same afternoon, pitching a 4-0 shutout win to end the day undefeated. Senior Heather Arnett scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning off an Igou sacrifice fly, while senior Sailor Hall, for the first time as a Gorilla, hit a home run in the fifth to extend the lead to 3-0. Lamont rounded out her productive day with an RBI single up the middle to score Igou. Sophomore Lexi Franklin (2-0) struck out a career-high 13 batters in a complete game shutout. The 13 strikeouts are tied for the seventh most in program history.
The Gorillas would get their rest before facing Adams State yet again on Saturday, this time cruising to a 11-0 win over the Grizzlies. Trochim led the team with four RBI, going 2-of-2 with two walks drawn; Arnett and junior Bailey Haselhorst tied for the team lead with three runs scored. Hall threw four shutout innings in the circle, striking out three, with Erica Schertz collecting the final three outs.
The second game of the day was a nail biter, as the Gorillas fell behind 1-0 after the first inning against Colorado State Pueblo. Leading off the seventh and final inning, Hall connected on her first home run as a Gorilla to tie it up 1-1, before an Arnett bunt and score from a throwing error by the ThunderWolves pitcher gave PSU the 2-1 lead. Ava Laurent closed the door on CSUP with a shutout seventh inning and picked up her second win of the season following a complete game, seven strikeout performances.
The Gorillas would wrap up action on Sunday, as they fought the ThunderWolves again, this time coming away with a 11-2 win. Pittsburg State was led by Igou with three RBI, with a pair of doubles. Hall, sophomore Jaylee Jefferson and senior Alleyna Rushing each scored twice to tie for the team lead. Crabb picked up the win after 5.0 innings of work, striking out four. Franklin wrapped up a stellar weekend with two shutout innings of relief.
