Gorilla Baseball shuts out Bearcats, Kafka named Pitcher of the Week

Pittsburg started the weekend of home game play on Mar. 1 against the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats. The Gorillas trailed 8-3 after three innings of play, but they secured four runs in the bottom of the fourth and three in the sixth to secure the score at 10-10. Holmes then went in with his two run double to win the game. The Gorillas clinched a 12-10 win with Josh Holmes hitting a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning. 

Boston Down (2-0) allowed one hit and fanned two batters within 2.0 innings of work, earning a win in relief. Andrew Wisner received his third save of the season by throwing the final three outs in the ninth. 
Nixon Brannan had three hits in the contest, including a double, Cade Clemmons tripled and went 2 for 4 at the plate. Blake Mozley, Clemmons, and Brannan joined Holmes with two RBI each. Northwest Missouri State had a pair of errors, which Pitt State benefitted from.  

Graduate student and right-handed pitcher Alex Kafka threw seven shutout innings on Saturday Mar. 2. Gorilla batters hit four home runs to earn a 10-0 run-rule victory over the Bearcats.  

The Gorillas were up 3-0 by the first inning. Pitt State then took a 4-0 lead by the seventh inning. Daegan Brady, Austin Warkins, and Brannan all hit home runs within a six-run game to stop the game early. 

Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo hit a solo home run in the third inning. Choy Foo finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, a home run and two RBI.  

Warkins also collected three hits, while Brady and Joe Hamilton had a pair of hits. 
 
Kafka had six singles in the contest, with no walks and fanned four batters. 

The Gorillas finished their sweep of the Bearcats with a 12-3 win on Saturday Mar. 3.  
Brannan had a solo home run, three runs scored, and went 2 for 2 at the plate with a double. Hayden Dyer hit a grand slam for a four-run fifth inning. Clemons had a solo homerun and Hamiliton had a two-run triple.  

Landon Reith, who is 2-0, allowed one hit in 1.1 innings of relief work. Brady Pacha fanned eight batters, walked one batter, scattered five hits, and surrendered two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Both Cadyn Castellanos and Cole Askew closed out the final 3.0 innings of work.. 

The Bearcats dropped to 8-10 overall and 1-5 in MIAA play following the series. 

Kafka was named MIAA Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 3 thanks to his performance during the series.  

Pitt State will travel to Claremore, Okla., for a three-game MIAA series against Rogers State University Mar. 8-10.
