On Oct. 15, the Student Government Association held a community cornhole tournament to bring the community of Pittsburg together and raise funds to help support a downtown residential cleanup. Pitt State students and community members came to compete in the tournament which was held outside on the Russ Hall lawn. Director of Community Engagement and member of SGA Cory Humble was tasked with planning the event. Humble and other members of SGA began planning for the event in August.
“This event’s planning kind of started in late August and early September, just kind of looking at how many people we needed, cornhole boards, everything in the works,” said Humble.
One reason the planning of the event took significant time could be because of the large scale that the SGA made sure the event would have. In addition to cornhole, the SGA brought in both a live band and food trucks.
“It kind of started out with the idea that the more things we provided, the more fun that could be had, go big or go home,” said Humble.
The event not only provided a chance for students to get out and have fun, but also brought in community members from Pittsburg to build a tighter bond between Pitt State students and members of the Pittsburg community.
“We have a pretty good mix right now of both students and community members, I definitely would’ve loved it to be a lot bigger than it currently is, but I think for the first one that we’ve ever had, I think we did a pretty okay job at introducing the community to some of the things that PSU has going on,” said Humble.
