The Student Government Association at Pittsburg State plans to hold its largest community service day of the year. The BIG Event is a community-wide service project that helps maintain residences. Services students will have the opportunity to volunteer for mulching around trees and flower beds, raking leaves and several lawn jobs.

The BIG Event has taken place at the university for the last 21 years. Pittsburg State students are encouraged to volunteer and help tidy up the city, while also gaining service experience that helps build a resume and reputation. This type of service opportunity has proven to be successful for Pitt State, with hundreds of students participating year after year.

According to Gorilla Engage, the event will be held on April 6, lasting an entire 24-hour period. meaning many students will be assigned to various homes around the city, lending a hand on a plethora of projects to embellish the city.

Corey Humble, the Director of Community Engagement for Student Government Association, explained how this event impacts community members and volunteers alike.

“It’s a service that’s needed,” said Humble. “It’s our way of taking care of the community members of Pittsburg and I think it’s a great way to do that.”

Humble also mentioned that the success of the event is the reason for its longevity.

“I think that’s why it’s lasted for 21 years,” he said. “It’s the largest community service event that happens every year because of that. This year alone we’re servicing 50 houses with over 400 volunteers.”

The Student Government Association posted the event on Gorilla Engage, where students can sign in with their student account and RSVP.

“That’s like the largest volunteer total that we’ve ever had because people are very passionate about helping. And I think that it’s only going to continue to grow and only continue to get bigger.”
