Pitt State is off to a blazing hot start to the NCAA Division II indoor track and field season, and the Gorillas show no signs of slowing down. Pitt State traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to participate in the Wooo Pig Classic, hosted by the University of Arkansas Razorbacks.

In the men’s action, junior sprinter Ilias Garcia lowered his school record and NCAA Division II leading time in the 60 meters. He was clocked at the fast time of 6.62 seconds. Redshirt sophomore jumper Johnetheon Lockett posted a season best mark in the triple jump, 49 feet, 7 inches, while junior jumper Caden Williams logged a season best time of 47.35 in the 400 meters. Freshman jumper Xavier Byers also equaled his season best mark in the high jump, clearing 7-0.5.

In the women’s action, junior high jumper Jazmine Williamson and sophomore high jumper Bethany Umbarger both posted season best marks by clearing 5-8.5. They exited the meet in a tie for sixth place in Division II this season.

Before the Wooo Pig Classic, redshirt junior Drew Wilhite wrapped up day two action in the men’s heptathlon with a personal best 5,197 point total. He won the pole vault competition Saturday to help him edge past his previous personal best (5196) by one point. He now sits in fifth place in D2 this season.

The Gorillas will return to the races this weekend, as they host the 11th annual Russ Jewett Indoor Gorilla Classic this Friday and Saturday. The following weekend, the Gorillas will take to the road again, returning to Fayetteville for the Arkansas Qualifier. The weekend after this, the competition ramps up fully, as the Gorillas will host the MIAA Indoor Championships.

With the indoor track and field season nearing the end of its run, the Gorillas will need to shift their focus as they transition to the postseason. With the recent track record of both the women’s and men’s teams, the teams will have their eyes on the NCAA indoor track and field championship crown this coming March.
