Another week, another three games won for the Pitt State Gorillas baseball team. Pitt State picked up wins over three teams, playing during the week for all three games. This included a ranked win, as the Gorillas pick up steam heading towards the end of the season.
The first game of the week came on the road, as the Gorillas took on the Southwest Baptist Bearcats in a 15-3 win over seven innings. Pitt State got on the board first, scoring a pair of runs in the second. The Gorillas continued to pour it on, scoring in every inning until the seventh. The Bearcats would find the scoreboard in the fifth and seventh inning, while Pitt State put the nail in the coffin in the top of the seventh with five more runs.
Redshirt senior Isaac Webb led the game with four runs driven in, with a home run and triple accounting for his hits in the game. Senior Cooper Wesslund went 3-of-4 to lead the team for hits, being one of four Gorillas to accumulate multiple hits. Joining Webb with multiple RBI in the game were junior Eric Bacon, junior Landin Midgett, junior Seth Dandridge, and junior Landon Bruce.
Following this game, the Gorillas returned to the mound on Wednesday, the next night, as they faced the #24 Missouri Science and Technology Miners. Pitt State picked up a win over the Miners, winning 9-5. Pitt State took the lead with a run in the first but fell behind after allowing five runs in the second. Things looked grim, but Pitt State picked up a pair of runs in the fifth before exploding six runs in the sixth inning to retake the lead. The Gorillas would pick up a couple more runs, while holding the Miners scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Senior Dagen Brewer doubled, homered, and drove in five runs in the contest. He also drew three bases on balls. Bacon had a triple among his three hits, and Wesslund went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Senior Preston Giltner limited the Miners to three hits over 4.0 innings of work.
The good times kept rolling for Pitt State, as they followed up that win with a 10-3 performance over Missouri Western. Pitt State got on the board first, scoring in the first, before being answered by the Lions, who tied it up. Pitt State would not let that stand, as they scored four runs in the third inning, then five more in the fourth inning, taking a ten-point lead and riding it to a victory.
Brewer smacked a solo home run at the bottom of the first inning, and Webb belted a grand slam in the third inning. Senior Grant Nottlemann also drove in a pair of runs in the afternoon. Three Pitt State relievers – redshirt freshman Porter Starnes, senior Preston Giltner and redshirt junior Cason Long – combined to hold the Lions scoreless over the final 5.1 innings of work.
