Pitt State now sits at 13-0 on the season, as their undefeated season continues after winning four games at the Branson D2 Battle this past weekend. Much like the Gorilla Baseball team this past weekend, the Gorillas have set a new record for wins to start a season, beating the previous 10-0 record by three games.
Pitt State started off the weekend with a 10-3 win over Missouri – St. Louis. Pitt State got off to a 5-2 start in the first four innings, and kept on the pressure, only going scoreless in the seventh inning. The Gorillas limited Missouri – St. Louis to just a single run over the last stretch.
Senior Kyleigh Lamont belted her second home run of the season and finished the game with three RBI while being one of five members of the team to collect multiple hits. Senior Alleyna Rushing and senior Lexi Davis scored twice in the game with Davis collecting a pair of doubles and rushing a pair of stolen bases. Sophomore Lexi Franklin (3-0) got the win after 5.1 innings with four strikeouts as junior Emma Crabb finished the game with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
The Gorillas would then turn their attention to Southern Nazarene University later that day, winning a tight 3-2 match. Pitt State would take the lead early with a two run first inning, but things would get knotted up at the top of the fifth. The Gorillas took back the lead in the bottom of the same inning, taking the win after holding Southern Nazarene scoreless for the remainder of the day.
Pitt State got on the board in the first inning from junior Haili Igou’s second home run of the season to make it 2-0 early. Junior Ava Laurent (3-0) had her no-hit bid broken up in the fifth on a two-run home run to tie it up heading to the bottom half of the inning. Senior Heather Arnett got on base with a single and stole second before grad student Kadyn Trochim RBI double scored her and put the Gorillas up 3-2, a lead that PSU would not relinquish.
The following day, the Gorillas started with a 8-0 win over Christian Brothers University in just six innings. Pitt State jumped to a 5-0 start in the first two innings and closed out with three runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.
Arnett would lead the Gorillas, scoring two runs and hitting three RBI. Rushing would contribute with two RBI and a run scored. Crabb allowed just two hits, as she pitched all six innings in the shutout for her fourth win of the season.
The Gorillas wrapped up their weekend against Arkansas Tech, winning 8-2. The game was pretty close, as both teams came out of the first inning tied at one apiece. Pitt State would take the lead in the fourth with a run, before exploding for six runs in the fifth. Arkansas Tech would score one in the final inning to make it 8-2.
Arnett would score off a hit by rushing in the first, quickly tied by Arkansas Tech. Lamont would reach home plate three times, once in the fourth and twice in the fifth. Senior Sailor Hall knocked in a homer with the bases loaded in the fifth to help tilt the scales in Pitt States favor. Laurent earned the win, pitching four innings, while Hall came in relief, pitching three innings.
