Uptown to play “Motown Remixed” at Bicknell Center

Uptown, a music group widely known in New York City, is set to come to the Bicknell Center for a concert on September 18thremixing the Motown style of music for a new generation of listeners.

Uptown is, according to their website, “a group of men who combine the smooth stylings of rhythm and blues with the fresh hits of today.” They perform music tailored to fans of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.

Uptown has been a group since 2017 and has performed many different styles of music. They often perform covers of popular songs. They talk more about their start in the music industry on their website.

“Uptown started their career early 2017 with dedication, youthful energy, and a passion for their craft that they continue with to this day,” the website says. “From their humble beginnings in Harlem NYC they have managed to spread their unique perspective on Motown/Soul to audiences all over the globe.”

The group has had the opportunity to perform for major audiences across the United States and to perform live on major TV programs.

“Members of Uptown have been seen on X-Factor (USA), NBC’s “The Winner Is”, POP STARS, and performed at top notch venues around the globe,” the website says.

Uptown performs covers of many popular songs.

“What gives Uptown its edge over their contemporaries is how unique their perspective is on the classics,” the website says. “Their signature style can be seen in their choreography, arrangement, and contemporary attack of their content which is all curated by Uptown.”

The music group includes Alfred Jackson, Ali Llacer, Bradford Bell, Derrick Leonárd, Joel Walker, Jonathan Walker, and Lyle Volkwyn, who all perform together as they tour around the United States.

Uptown has also described their style of music as “Timeless melodies to a new beat. Skylimit Productions presents UPTOWN, an exploration of rhythm and soul.”

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the group enjoyed performing songs from famous groups as a cove. They stated in a message to their fans that “pre-Covid 19, we were touring the US and worldwide with our NYC and Los Angeles members, touring our show based on some of our favorite acts like The Jackson 5, Temptations, Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and many more.”

The COVID-19 pandemic left many music groups confused on what to do as many venues cancelled shows. The Uptown group chose to spend the extra time to focus on creating online content for their fans. They posted covers to songs to their YouTube channel. The group began producing covers of famous songs as concerts and tours were cancelled in 2020. Some of these songs include “70’s Soul Medley (featuring the temptations, the spinners, & the Ojays)” and “I Want You Back” by the Jackson Five.

Uptown will be performing “Motown Remixed” at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts on September 18th at 7pm. Tickets can be ordered at http://www.pittstate.edu/office/ticket-office. Tickets are $25 per person and are currently on sale while seats are available.
