Office of Career Services offers events, services for students

Pittsburg State’s Office of Career Services assists in a multitude of services.

From resume building to mock-interviews, Career Services provides help to students virtually and in-person.

“…We host many career fairs and events throughout the year and we also coordinate the student employment program..,” said Kim Hull, Assistant Director for Career Development & Student Employment.

Located in rooms 202 and 203 of Horace Mann, Career Services offers help in choosing a major, career counseling, creating resumes and cover letters or updating existing ones, job and internship searches, interview preparation, and more. Additionally, Career Services have information and can provide guidance to follow-up letters, networking, reference resources, personal statements, and salary negotiations.

Career Services also offers professional clothing at no charge with the Career Clothes Closet. Currently, the Career Clothes Closet is closed temporarily and they are not accepting donations at this time.

Student employment is handled through Career Services. Students can work in almost any department on campus in positions such as office assistants, library assistants, lab assistants, research assistants, grounds assistants, tutors, custodians and student publications. To be a student employee, students are required to be enrolled in at least six credit hours. All students must establish that they are eligible for employment in the United States by the guidelines administered through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. International students with an F-1 and/or J-1 visa may work on-campus. Students can work a total of 20 hours per week during the semester and 40 hours a week during academic breaks. During the summer, students can work 20 hours per week if they are enrolled in a class and 40 hours if they are not enrolled in a summer course. There is no limit to how many positions a student can hold on campus however students cannot exceed the maximum 20 hours total.

“Handshake is our online job posting system,” Hull said. “It is known around campus as Gorillas4Hire. Students can look for employment through this system as an incoming freshman, throughout their college career and even as alumni. Students can also search for employer information including companies within their fields and specific contact information for that employer. Gorillas4Hire gives students an opportunity to receive messages from employers if there is a specific job opening in their area of interest. Overall, (it’s a) great system for students to utilize and I would encourage all students to login and venture around to see how it can benefit them.”

Events hosted by Career Services can be found on their website or on Pitt State’s Calendar of Events. Among popular events hosted by Career Services are the Fall Career Expo, Spring Career Day, Meet the Firms Day, and the Student Etiquette Dinner.

If students have questions about Career Services, they can contact them via email at careers@pittstate.edu or via phone at 620-235-4140.

“Career Services is excited to help students with any questions they have. All of our services and resources we have available… (are)  to help students navigate their career path,” Hull said.”Have a great Fall semester Gorillas.”
