The Natural Ties organization at Pitt State is an active organization that, according to their page on Gorilla Engage, “facilitates friendships among college students & adults with… developmental disabilities from the community. By engaging in common activities, peers with and without developmental disabilities create new friendships & have fun together. Activities are planned by the student members, and student members are given much discretion regarding the activities and focus of the group…”
“We haven’t really planned anything for the fall yet but (we) usually do a get-to-know-you game at the first meeting of the year and play games to get to know everyone,” said Kinsey Morey, a senior in chemistry and President of Natural Ties.
The organization meets once per week. Natural Ties has a Facebook page named ‘Natural Ties @ Pittsburg State University’ which they use to post when and where each meeting is as well as include a description of the activity they will be doing that week.
“Students can join on Gorilla Engage, but you don’t have to be a part of the club to come to meetings,” Morey said. “Everyone is welcome anytime.”
Throughout the pandemic, Natural Ties hosted a variety of virtual game events like Bingo, Jeopardy, hangman/would you rather, and Pictionary. Natural Ties also hosted virtual dance parties, Bingo nights, and crafts.
