Volleyball team ends regular season at home, defeats Emporia

The volleyball team ended the regular season at home in John Lance Arena’s Whetzel Court against the Emporia State University Hornets on Saturday, April 10. The Gorillas won the final match up of the season in three straight sets (3-0).

The volleyball Gorillas started off hot and took set one (25-16). They didn’t stop there, going on to win set two (25-16) before winning set three (25-19) and securing the victory.

Head Volleyball Coach Jen Gomez thought the team played well against the Emporia State Hornets.

“We played Emporia and won in three,” Gomez said. “(We) played well and (it) was nice to see my team execute our offense and we played tough defense.”

One player stood out to Gomez during the game.

“Hannah Martin played well,” Gomez said.

The game against Emporia brough the regular season to an end. It is now time for the MIAA Post-Season tournament. The first round sets the Gorillas up against Newman on Friday, April 16 at 11 a.m. in Topeka at Washburn University’s Lee Arena.

“…We need to defensively own the match,” Gomez said. “(If) we can shut down (and) contain their big hitters and (if) our middles can our hit theirs, we should be fine.”

Earlier this month, the Gorillas faced Newman and won (3-2). The Gorillas took set one (25-16) and dropped set two (18-25), allowing the Newman Jets to tie the game 1-1. The Gorillas weren’t able to pick up the third set and lost again (16-25), putting them behind. The volleyball team came back to take sets four (25-10) and five (15-13) to win the game.

Prior to that, the Gorillas played the Newman Jets earlier this season in March at their home court in Wichita. The Gorillas held the Jets off and won that match (3-0) in three straights sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-19).
