Letter to the Editor—Consent

Paiton Webster, PSU student

Consent is permission for something to happen or an agreement to do something. Consent is a huge topic for college students these days. Rape and sexual violence has been an issue in our society forever. There are many women in my life that have been raped or sexually assaulted. According to http://www.rainn.org: https://www.rainn.org/statistics “Every 73 seconds an American is sexually assaulted. And every 9 minutes, that victim is a child.” Why don’t we try to change that.

I believe that by teaching children about consent and having them practice it on a daily basis would help reduce these statistics. I’d like to encourage students to learn more about consent and how they could help with this issue by teaching their children or future children about consent and why it’s so important.

According to http://www.marketwatch.com.., “This is just the latest study to show sex education programs that put an emphasis on consent and healthy sexual relationships could help reduce the rate of sexual violence amongst young adults.”

Rape and sexual assault have been an issue for far too long. As the next generation of parents and teachers, let’s try to lower the statistics. Girls shouldn’t be scared to walk home alone at night. Let’s help educate the children in our lives about consent and how to practice it.
