The Pitt State volleyball team is preparing for their upcoming season. They will begin the season with the Gorilla Classic Tournament. The Gorillas will face off against East Central from Thursday, September 5 to Saturday, Sept. 7. They will also be facing Midwestern State on Friday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. The next match is Saturday, Sept. 7 against Western Colorado at 4:40 p.m. To close the Gorilla Classic, the team will go head to head with Southwest Baptist on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. All four games are home games in the John Lance Arena.
The team will report on Tuesday, Aug. 13 and begin practicing on Wednesday, Aug. 14.
Head coach Jen Gomez is looking forward to the 2019 season. Gomez says she is most looking forward to seeing all the returners come back but also seeing some new members and having everyone come together as a single unit.
“I am just excited to see how the returners come back and when we are adding in quite a few new freshmen, I am anxious to see kind of what our chemistry is like in the mix,” Gomez said. “Hopefully we can kind of pick up and carry on the success that we started last year and carry that over and come out strong. I think that is what I am looking forward to the most.”
According to Gomez, not much will have changed between this season and last season.
“I do not know that it will be drastically different,” Gomez said. “… We are going to be kind of young, but I had five freshman that saw significant playing time last year, so we are going to be a young team. I think we are going to be pretty feisty. I think we are going to have a lot of fire out there and I am hoping that they come in ready to prove people wrong and show them what they can do and start this new era of Pitt State Volleyball.”
Gomez has high hopes for the team during the 2019 season.
“(I am hoping to see) consistency (from the team),” Gomez said. “I want to see the young team grow. I want to see them kind of come together quickly. I want to see them be successful, but I want to see consistency throughout.”
Join the Gorillas at the John Lance Arena in the Whetzel Court on Thursday, September 5 at 4:30 p.m. to kick off the beginning of the season in a home match against East Central.
