Men’s Rugby wins 1/3 weekend games

The Pitt State Men’s Rugby Club travelled to Missouri to compete in the Gateway Conference 7’s tournament Saturday, April 13.

Club president Grant Schultz believes the team did not do as well as they had hoped to. Many of the club members were unable to attend for various reasons, which contributed to the team’s loss according to Schultz.

Well we played three matches,” Schultz said. “We won one of them and lost two of them, so we did not do so well. But we had a lot of players who were not available for a multitude of reasons, so we did not really get the results we wanted.”

Senior Josh Watson was selected for the All-Conference 7’s team whichaccording to Schultz, was the best thing to come out the games this past weekend.

No (no one really stood out to me),” Schultz said. “I will say Josh Watson got selected for the All-Conference 7s team and that is probably the best thing I would take away from this (past) weekend.”

Schultz believes the team needs to work on their tackling and improve before their next game, so they can perform better during matches and possibly have a better outcome

Our tackling needs to get a lot better and that would be the main thing,” Schultz said.

Watson and Bradley Payne stood out to Schultz during the three games in the tournament.

Josh Watson had a really, really good weekend and so did Bradley Payne,” Schultz said.

Schultz hopes for the team to rebound from these losses and to bring some wins home over the course of their next couple of games.

(I hope that we can) just to get back in the win margin (and to) just to get back on to the right track,” Schultz said.

The Rugby club is always recruiting and welcoming new players. Students can join them during practice from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at the rugby pitch. The rugby pitch is directly east of 909 E. Ford Street. For more information regarding the club or about joining the clubcontact the Recruitment Chair Alex Bueso at (913)-956-8259. They are also available on Facebook at Pittsburg State University Rugby Club

Anyone can play rugby. We practice at 5-7 (p.m.) at the rugby pitch…,” Schultz said.

The Rugby Club has an upcoming match. The 3rd Annual Pat Mercer Memorial Match vs KC Blues hosted by Pittsburg State University will take place Saturday, April 20
