A Pittsburg State student and a resident of Pittsburg were killed in Cherokee County earlier this month after a head-on car crash.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office says that Justin “Bubba” Ramirez, 21, a resident of Parsons and a senior in engineering technology, died on Friday, June 6.
The sheriff’s office says that after the car driven by Ramirez crossed the U.S. Highway 69 center line, it collided with the car driven by Kenneth Orender, 59. Ramirez was dead at the scene.
Orender was life-flighted to the Freeman Health System hospital in Joplin, Mo., but he died early in the morning of June 7.
Ramirez worked as an intern at Able Manufacturing in Joplin.
An obituary published online says Ramirez enjoyed playing baseball, hunting, fishing and spending time with family.
He participated in the Parsons Babe Ruth League as part of a team that competed several times at the state championship.
Pittsburg State published a statement of condolences on June 9, with a comment from Steve Scott, university president.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those involved in Friday’s accident,” Scott said. “I extend my deepest sympathies to Justin’s and Mr. Orender’s family and friends and offer condolences on behalf of the entire Pittsburg State University community.”
Ramirez was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Parsons on June 11, following a service at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
