Baseball splits final series
Team wraps up season wwith 18-32 overall

The Gorilla baseball team wrapped up its season with a split in a four-game series against the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State on Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26, in Maryville, Mo.
In game one of Friday’s doubleheader, the Bearcats took the lead with 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. The Gorillas tied the game in the top of the second with a solo home run by junior Luke Bordewick.
Northwest Missouri answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead.
In the fifth inning, PSU took over the bases, scoring a total of four runs; one coming on an error, an RBI single by junior Derek Hackney and two on an RBI double by senior Brad Foss.
The Gorillas held the lead for the remainder of the game, finishing with a final score of 5-2.
Senior Tyler Thompson got the win, pitching a complete game and allowing two runs on five hits and striking out six.
In game two, the Gorillas took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI sacrifice bunt by sophomore Samuel Falcon. The Bearcats tied the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Pitt State extended its lead in the fifth with an RBI single by junior Nathan Arnold. The Gorillas then scored two in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Foss and an RBI single by Arnold, giving Pitt State a 4-1 advantage.
Northwest Missouri scored one run in the seventh and one run in the ninth, but the Bearcats were unable to outrun the Gorillas, who held the lead for a 4-3 victory. Senior James Fitzgearlds got the win, pitching six and one-third innings and allowing two runs on 10 hits. Sophomore Ryan McKay got the save.
On Saturday, April 26, the two teams returned to the ballpark. Unfortunately, the doubleheader did not go as well for the Gorillas as the previous one did.
In game one, the Bearcats had a 2-0 lead in the second. Pitt State tied the game in the fifth inning, scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI double by senior Cody Ball. However, Northwest Missouri broke the game open in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring three in the fifth and six in the sixth to take an 11-2 lead and later victory.
Game two started out better for the Gorillas, who had an early lead 1-0 at the end of the first inning thanks to an RBI groundout by Foss. The Bearcats claimed the lead in the third after scoring two runs. In the seventh inning, Northwest Missouri scored six runs, taking an 8-1 lead.
Pitt State was able to score a run in the ninth on an RBI double by senior Kyle Dickens, but in the end the Gorillas were defeated. The final score: 8-2.
The Gorillas finished its season at 18-32 overall and 13-26 in conference play.
Senior Brad Foss finished his career with the most doubles in school history, 51.
The MIAA will announce All-MIAA teams on Thursday, May 1, before the MIAA tournament.
