Softball sweep Missouri Southern

The Pitt State softball team swept their rival Missouri Southern in a doubleheader at home on Wednesday, April 9.
In game one, the Gorillas jumped to a 6-0 lead after the bottom of the second. Junior McKenzie Rynard got things started with a solo home run. Sophomore Jordan Bradshaw had an RBI single. Senior Brenna George had a two-RBI double and senior Tiffany Brown had a two-RBI single.
Missouri Southern scored two in the top of the third to make the score 6-2. The Gorillas scored three in the bottom of the fourth. The first run came on an RBI single by Rynard and the other two runs came on a two-RBI double by freshman Nicole Nease. That made the score 9-2.
The Lions scored five in the top of the sixth to make the score 9-7. Pitt State got one in the bottom half of the sixth on an RBI single by freshman Kylie Guthier. Missouri Southern got two runs in the seventh but couldn’t complete the comeback and the Gorillas won by a final of 10-9.
In game two, the Lions took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Gorillas answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Cheslyn Mitchell, junior, had an RBI double to get Pitt State on the board. The Gorillas then got RBI singles from Nease and Guthier. The final run of the inning came on a sac fly by junior Samantha Grove. The Gorillas extended their lead with four runs in the bottom of the second. Pitt State got two two-run homers from Brown and Guthier to push the lead to 8-1. Brown scored on a wild pitch in the third to make the lead 9-1. The Lions scored three in the fifth to make the game 9-4. Missouri Southern scored two in the top half of the sixth to cut the lead to three, but then Guthier hit her second two-run homer to make the score 11-6. The Lions got one run in the seventh, but the Gorillas would get the win by a final of 11-7.
The Gorillas dropped two games against No. 7-ranked Emporia State at home on Friday, April 4. The Hornets took game one by a final 8-2. In game two, the Gorillas trailed 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh when Rynard hit a two-run homer to send the game to extra innings. Emporia State scored three in the top half of the eighth, but in the bottom half of the inning it was Rynard again, this time with a three-run homer to tie the game at nine. Emporia State scored five in the top of the ninth and won by a final of 14-9. The game saw Brown hit her 20th home run of the season and is the first Gorilla to hit 20 home runs in a single season.
The Gorillas split a doubleheader with Washburn at home on Saturday, April 5. In game one, the Gorillas trailed 8-2 heading into the bottom half of the second. The Gorillas scored two in the second, three in fourth and nine in fifth to win by a final of 16-8. Pitt State got home runs in the game from junior Cheslyn Mitchell, Brown and Nease. The Ichabods took the victory in game two by a score of 5-3. The Gorillas scored one run on an error in the second and scored two in the fifth on a home run by Rynard.
Pitt State split a doubleheader with Rogers State at home on Tuesday, April 8. The Gorillas took game one by a score of 9-1. The Gorillas got a great pitching performance from sophomore Kylie Harpst, who pitched a complete game allowing just one run on three hits. The Gorillas dropped the second game by a score of 4-3. Pitt State scored on a single by Rynard in the first, an error in the sixth, and an RBI single by George in the seventh.
Pitt State is 21-21 overall and 5-11 in MIAA play. The Gorillas will host Nebraska-Kearney for a doubleheader on April 11. The Gorillas will then host Fort Hays State for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12.
