10 first-place finishes
Strong showing in first outdoor meet

The Pittsburg State men’s and women’s track and field teams started their outdoor seasons at the PSU Invitational Saturday, March 29, at Prentice Gudgen Track.
For the men, freshman Bo Farrow took first place in two events. He won the discus with a provisional qualifying (PQ) mark of 163-6. Farrow also took the top spot in the shot put with a PQ mark of 54-10.75.
Senior Steven Mann won the long jump with a PQ mark of 23-8. Marquise Cushon won the triple jump with a PQ mark of 48-8.75. Junior Luke Wilson placed second in the hammer throw with a PQ mark of 178-8 and senior Cody Holland placed second behind Farrow in the shot put with a PQ mark of 53-0.
In the running events, senior James Carter III won the 800m with a time of 1:55.87. Junior Marquel Nickens won the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.72 and the 4X100m relay team consisting of senior Kyle Utsey, juniors Andre Sanders and Jason Crow and freshman Bryce Starks won with a PQ time of 41.17.
Starks placed second in the 100m with a time of 10.79. Sophomore Casey Steinmiller finished second to Nickens in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.12. Freshman Andrew Rodges placed second in the 800m behind Carter III with a time of 1:57.08.
On the women’s side of the competition, freshman Emily Dearman won the heptathlon with a total of 4,917 points. Sophomore D’Andria Blow won the discus with a throw of 140-4. Freshman Heather Glenn placed second in the pole vault with a PQ clearance of 12-0.5. Senior Amber Kloster finished second in the javelin with a PQ throw of 144-5, while sophomore Darien Stancell placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 159-4.
In the running events, senior Casey Epps won the 1,500m with a time of 4:41.54 and sophomore Hannah DeVries won the 5,000m with a time 17:45.63.
The Gorillas’ next meet will be Saturday, April 5, at the ESU State Farm Relays in Emporia. The Gorillas will return home for the sixth annual David Suenram Gorilla Classic on April 12.
