Off to a rocky start

The Pittsburg State softball team played its home opener against Arkansas Tech on Feb. 22.
Game one of the double-header went the Gorillas’ way. Arkansas Tech got things started with a three-run home run to jump out to a quick lead.
Pitt State answered with two runs. The first run came on an RBI single by senior Tiffany Brown. The Gorillas got the second run when Freshman Kylie Guthier hit into a double-play.
Pitt State trailed, 4-2, going into the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, Junior Cheslyn Mitchell hit an RBI triple,and sophomore Jordan Bradshaw had an RBI double to tie the game, 4-4.
Sophomore Alex Perez hit an RBI single in the fifth to give the Gorillas the lead. Bradshaw hit a solo home run in the sixth to widen the lead, 6-4, setting the eventual final score.
Junior Samantha Grove got the win, pitching a complete game and allowing four runs on seven hits.
Game two did not go as well for the Gorillas.
Freshman Nicole Nease had an RBI double in the first inning. That would be the only run of the game for Pitt State. Arkansas Tech had a huge fourth inning, scoring six runs.
They would add one more in the sixth and would defeat the Gorillas, 7-1. Senior Haleigh Sills took the loss; she allowed six runs in three innings and two outs of work.
The Gorillas will play in the MSSU Memorial Tournament from Saturday, March 1, to Sunday, March 2, in Joplin, Mo.
Pitt State will play Wayne State of Wayne, Neb., at 10 a.m. and William Jewell at 2 p.m. on March 1. They will play Truman State at 3 p.m. and the University of Missouri-Saint Louis at 5 p.m. March 2.
The Gorillas will travel back to Joplin to play a double header against Missouri Southern on March 8.
