Decade of puppies

The chips are open, the drinks cold, the chicken wings spicy and couch space is limited as anticipation grows for this weekend’s upcoming Super Bowl Sunday. But for those who aren’t diehard football fanatics, an arguably cuter athletic event kicks off this Sunday as well: the Puppy Bowl.
More than 264 paws will hit the turf during Animal Planet’s 10th annual Puppy Bowl, which airs at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2.
The event takes place in an enclosed playpen resembling a football field. Just like its human counterpart, Puppy Bowl includes official game balls, or squeaky toys in this case.
Coverage from a miniature blimp piloted by hamsters is broadcast from above the field, while waterproof cameras inside water dishes provide an alternative splash to the action. The game is even refereed.
Feline-friendly viewers can also get in on the cuteness with the Kitty Half-Time Show, and Puppy Bowl X will feature a new edition to the lineup, chilling out the canine commotion with penguin cheerleaders.
Fans of the Puppy Bowl may follow the event on Twitter during game day, participate in a fantasy league and look at individual lineups of competing puppies online.
Each of the puppies featured during Sunday’s show is up for adoption by its respective shelter. Information on adoption, details on the dog and other need-to-know facts will be featured during the show and can be found online at www.animalplanet.com.
