Brown takes MIAA honors, again

For the second week in a row, wide receiver John Brown has received Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) conference player of the week honors.
The senior from Homestead, Fla. has been named as the MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week after becoming the all-time leading receiver in school history after Saturday’s victory, 59-38, over the Lincoln Blue Tigers in Jefferson City, Mo.
Brown caught nine passes for a career-best 237 yards and four touchdowns.
He also had a seven-yard touchdown run to score 30 points for the Pittsburg State Gorillas.
He finished the game with 294 all-purpose yards.
Brown has now passed former Harlon Hill Trophy winner and Pitt State player Ronnie West as the all-time leading receiver.
“It means a lot to me. It feels really good but there were guys on my team that helped me,” Brown said. “There was good blocking by the offensive line and good throws by the quarterback.”
But that wasn’t enough for Brown as he also tied PSU’s single-game scoring mark of 30 points. He came up one yard short of the Gorillas single-game receiving yards record.
He helped Pitt State’s offense generate 787 yards total.
“We kept saying that there’s going to be one of these days where he had eight or nine catches for 200 yards and that happened today,” said Tim Beck, head coach. “He can do so many things when he gets released well but the bottom line is that he can run well. He’s so elusive.”
Last week, Brown was named MIAA special teams player of the week after returning a kickoff for 95 yards and touchdown against Southwest Baptist.
MIAA defensive player of the week: Matt Longacre
Also named was defensive end Matt Longacre of Northwest Missouri who scored a touchdown off a fumble recovery for 17 yards in the Bearcats’ win, 53-7, over Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Longacre had four total tackles, with two tackles for a loss and one sack to be named the defensive athlete of the week.
MIAA special teams player of the week
The special teams athlete of the week honor went to Dominic Thomas of Missouri Western.
Thomas scored a touchdown off a 96 yard kickoff return in the Griffons’ 52-21 win over Fort Hays State. Missouri Western remains undefeated after four games.
