Audrey Tucker | reporter The SAC held a glow-in-the-dark concert to welcome the Epic Proportions Tour at Parrot Bey, located at 408 N. Locust, on the night of Wednesday, March 27. About 30 people attended. The lineup consisted of the band Lost in Atlantis, singer Gabe Kubanda and the band Halocene. Lost in Atlantis took the spotlight, covering their clothes in brightly colored tape. Glow sticks and glowing balls were passed out to those in attendance. Jessica Leone, SAC member and sophomore in business management, says that she has been looking forward to using Parrot Bey. “The band members were friendly and easy to work with,” she said. Whetzels, Albright recognized for contributions Jay Benedict | editor-in-chief As part of the Apple Day celebration, Pittsburg State honored three people with the Ralf J. Thomas Distinguished Service Award for their contributions to the university. Catherine Albright and Alan and Roberta Whetzel received the award at the Apple Day Convocation on March 7 in McCray Hall. “They were all so humble… so humble to be recognized,” said Johnna Schremmer, director of alumni and constituent relations. “We’re very glad to be able to recognize them. Gretchen Burns | managing editor Last week saw the 106th annual Apple Day Convocation ceremony in McCray Hall, to mark the end of Apple Week and its theme of leadership. Lara Ismert, SGA president, welcomed those assembled on Thursday, March 7. Randy Roberts, curator of special collections and university archivist, recited the story and history of Apple Day, recounting the fiery destruction of Pittsburg State’s Russ Hall and its rebuilding. “Leadership is not based on status, but on a person’s actions,” said Roberts. Sigma Phi Epsilon (Sig Ep) and Sigma Sigma Sigma (Tri Sigs) held the fifth annual Ali Kemp fashion show and women’s self-defense seminar last Sunday, March 5. The event raised $1,400 for the Ali Kemp Education foundation (T.A.K.E.) “That’s about a thousand dollars more than what we raised last year,” said Katie George, junior in graphic communications and member of Sigma Sigma Sigma. “It was a huge improvement.” The event is Sig Ep’s national philanthropy, started by Roger Kemp (Sig Ep alumn of the University of Central Missouri), Ali’s father, in 2005. The Food & Culture Fair, hosted by the International Programs and Services Office and the International Students Association, will start at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Memorial Auditorium. Andy Gonzalez, graduate student in human resource development and president of the International Students Association, says it is the largest International Programs and Services event of the year.
