Album Review: Green Day – ¡Uno! (2012)

Green-Day-UNO

‘Poppy as hell, profane for no reason,’ 2.5/5 stars Carl J. Bachus | Collegio Writer Loud, angry and laced with pseudo-political commentary, Green Day has been a staple of modern punk since its breakthrough album, “Dookie,” in 1994. “¡Uno!,” the band’s ninth studio effort, manages to touch all of the familiar bases but miss the mark with each track. Gone is the fun of 2000’s “Warning” and the rock opera antics of “21st Century Breakdown” and the listener is left with a forced, empty-sounding collection of songs that leave so much to be desired that you have to wonder why they even bothered. The album opens with “Nuclear Family,” a raucous yet disposable track that…

‘Rocky Horror’ still a hit after 39 years

The crowd at the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" participate in the "Time Warp" dance during the movie.

Gretchen Burns | Collegio Reporter Micah Black says her experience last Friday night at the showing of “Rocky Horror Picture Show” was different from what she expected. “I’ve never been to it live,” said Black, junior in political science and French. “Oh gosh, it was so much fun. Everyone was throwing stuff. The toast was the best part.” “Rocky Horror” is shown annually at the Colonial Fox Theater. Those who attended could give a $5 donation, and buy a prop bag that they could use throughout the movie. The prop bags consisted of noisemakers, party hats, toast, a roll of toilet paper, birdseed, confetti and more, and, before the movie ran, viewers were shown when…

Film Review: Dredd (2012)

Karl Urban ("Star Trek") as Judge Dredd in "Dredd" (Lionsgate).

“Dredd” revival tries too hard, 3/5 stars. Todd Miller | Collegio Writer After last week’s disappointment, I was treated this week to a well-handled action movie that heralds the beginning of the fall-winter movie season. That movie is “Dredd.” “Dredd” is a revival of the “Judge Dredd” character from the British comic of the same name from the magazine, “2000 AD.” A Judge Dredd movie was released in 1995, starring Sylvester Stallone. Although “Dredd” is not related to its 1995 counterpart, it is a reintroduction of the character to more contemporary audiences and certainly an improvement over its 17-year-old cousin. “Judge Dredd (1995)” was a fairly decent film, but was overplayed and silly enough that…

Time Warp comes to Pittsburg

Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," playing at the Colonial Fox Theater on Sept. 21.

Gretchen Burns | Collegio Reporter The Time Warp is coming to town. The Colonial Fox Theater will show “Rocky Horror Picture Show” on Friday, Sept. 21, on the mural outside the theater. It has long been featured in midnight showings for more than 30 years, even though the movie was a bust when it debuted in 1975. That was before fans began to participate in the movie in 1977, when people started singing along with songs and dancing in theater aisles, which has made “Rocky Horror Picture Show” the longest running theatrical release in film history. Ross Schartel says he has attended several viewings of “Rocky Horror” and plans to see it Friday. “I’ve seen…

Movie Review: Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)

Alice (Milla Jovovich) dispatches a zombie in "Resident Evil: Retribution" (Screen Gems/Sony, 2012).

‘Retribution’ adds nothing to series, 1.5/5 stars Todd Miller | Collegio Writer The big summer releases are behind us and the holiday season releases are still a month away, meaning new releases right now are mostly shallow tripe, like “Resident Evil: Retribution.” The film is a sequel to “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” and it is part of the “Resident Evil” series. “Retribution” makes this clear, spending the first 20 minutes recapping the whole series and showing a battle that should’ve taken place in the previous movie … twice. After the battle, Alice (Milla Jovovich) finds herself captured in an unknown location, where she is interrogated by Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), a former ally who seems to…

Country music event draws in students

Russell Dickerson, 25, Nashville, TN rocks his guitar infront of the stage for PSU students during Gorilla Stampede Wednesday, Sept. 19.

Ellie Stewart | Collegio Reporter Country music filled the cool evening air and floated across campus drawing students from their dorms and Pack the Weede as Gorilla Stampede kicked off. Wednesday night saw the third anniversary of the event at PSU, which is meant to emulate Manhattan, Kan.’s much larger annual summer country music festival “Country Stampede.” The Student Activities Council brought the music of Russell Dickerson, Two Steps Back and Logan Mize to Practice Field #2. This year’s event was smaller than the previous, but still drew students. The concert was free to any student with a PSU ID and provided them an opportunity to enjoy music and the weather. “I think it’s awesome,”…

Music Review: Dave Matthews Band – “Away From the World”

"Away From the World," Dave Matthews Band (RCA).

DMB’s fresh take on old sound Carl J. Bachus | Collegio Reporter Nearly four years after their last album was released, the Dave Matthews Band returns with their eighth studio offering. “Away From the World” boasts some of the bands most inventive tracks since their sophomore effort, “Crash.” The album is produced by Steve Lillywhite, and it is his first collaboration with the band since 1998. The album first two tracks, “Broken Things” and “Mercy,” wouldn’t sound out of place next to “Crash Into Me” or the big and brassy “Belly Belly Nice,” which has a nice fiddle solo by Boyd Tinsley. The midsection provides listeners with the one of the album’s best tracks, “Gaucho,”…

The Words (2012) review

Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper in "The Words" (CBS Films).

‘Words’ tells boring story, 1.5/5 stars Todd Miller | Collegio Writer It must be the slow time of year at the theaters when they start showing movies about a book, about a book. Not in the creative “House of Leaves” sort of way, but in a dull, derivative way that makes for an uninteresting movie. “The Words” is about author Clay Hammond (Dennis Quaid). Well, not really. The movie is about his book “The Words,” which is about Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper), a wannabe author that discovers an old novel manuscript in an antique bag bought in Paris. Rory types up the manuscript, and his wife Dora (Zoe Saldana) finds it, and pushes him into…
