Gorillas tee off on rest of field

The Pitt State golf players had their hands full as they battled through tough winds to achieve the lowest score on both days of the Rockhurst Invite and earn the team title on March 5 and 6.
“As far as the team’s performance, I was obviously very satisfied with the victory,” senior Garret Fowler said. “This was a big confidence booster for us.”
After two days of tournament fun, the Gorillas shot 310 on Monday as well as finishing with a score of 323 on Tuesday. Coming in at a close second place was Rockhurst University. The Gorillas edged them by a slim 12-stroke margin.
Avila University came in a close third place with a score of 315 while William Jewell, Central Methodist University and Missouri Western State had the last three spots with scores of 324, 326 and 333 respectively.
Shooting best for the Gorillas during the 36-hold competition, junior Cole Murrin shot a solid 79 Tuesday to help bring the team title home for PSU. The performance also garnered him the individual medalist honors with a total score of 153.
Sophomore Brett Dowell had a great round as well, posting a score of 77 during the second day of the invite. Also coming up big for the Gorillas once again was freshman Justice Valdivia, who earned himself a score of 79
During the first day of competition on Monday, Cole Murrin shot a round of 74 to help the Gorillas take an early lead. He shared the medalist honors with Avila’s Geoff Gahn.
Brett Dowell shot a 77, while Justice Valdivia had the same score as he did the second go-around with a team third place of 79.
Rockhurst earned spots 10 through 14 to keep the invite close, but ultimately fell to the Gorillas.
“For the conditions it wasn’t bad scores,” Fowler said. “But I definitely hit it better than what my scores showed.”
The win was a huge confidence booster for the team, which has struggled in the past but.
“Being able to bring a win back to Pitt felt really satisfying,” Fowler said. “It has been so long since it has happened.”
Next up for the Gorillas is the Midwestern State Invitational at Wichita Falls Country Club on March 19-20 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Also on deck is the Arkansas Tech Classic March 26-27 at Chamberlyne Country Club in Danville, Ark.
