The Board began discussing the possibility of salary increases in late September, when members held closed-door sessions during special meetings to determine whether the Kansas Regents presidents had competitive salaries compared to other states. Public funds are not allocated to…
Smoking ban:
Is it necessary? Caitlin Taylor | Collegio Reporter For the last year, Student Government Association has been working to gain support and raise awareness regarding a proposed campus-wide smoking ban. Students are still undecided as to what stance they are taking on the issue. Thomas Gregory, an SGA senator, has been heading the campaign since the beginning. Despite making little progress with students last year, he hopes to make serious progress this coming spring. “We are creating a specific committee for the smoking ban for the spring and will develop a full comprehensive policy for the ban,” Gregory said. “We will propose it to the Senate in February and probably go back and forth on…
Pitt makes international effort
Jay Benedict | Managing Editor University President Steve Scott praised the commitment of Pitt State’s faculty and staff to internationalizing the campus while sharing his personal international experiences during a lecture for International Education Week. Scott’s lecture, titled “Internationalization: Each of Us Can Make a Difference,” focused on the positive effect of bringing in more international students and sending more PSU students abroad. He used his personal experiences to show what college students can gain from traveling and seeing other cultures. “I’m embarrassed I didn’t make it out of the country until I was 48,” Scott said. “I wish I could have done it at 18 or 20 because it would have been easier to…
All shook up
Students share reactions to Oklahoma earthquakes Jen Rainey | Collegio Reporter There was a lot of shaking this weekend and it wasn’t just students shaking their heads at the surprising loss to Washburn. No, several earthquakes struck Oklahoma and many students on campus noticed the tremors. Candin Nelson was playing a video game in her room at Willard Hall when everything on her bookshelves started shaking. “I felt the one on Friday and Saturday,” said Nelson, junior in psychology education. “I was asleep when the first one occurred and playing games when the second took place.” The series of earthquakes were centered between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. The first occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday, Nov….
Smartphone syndrome:
Are students becoming technology dependent? Carl Bachus | Collegio Reporter With the introduction of Apple’s iPhone in the summer of 2007, the telecommunications industry has seen a boost in demand for smartphones. With the added convenience and falling costs, students are seeing an increased dependence on their handheld computers. “I could be without it, but I wouldn’t be happy,” said Lauren Holthus, a freshman in commercial graphics. Holthus attributed most of her phone use to Facebook and games. Facebook, Angry Birds and Pandora are among the most downloaded apps for Android and iPhone, the top smartphone operating system manufacturers. With all these features, some users have a hard time leaving their phones alone for long…
Student group promotes unity, campus diversity
Zach Wagner | Collegio Reporter As the enrollment on Pitt State’s campus grows so does its diversity. One new student group’s mission is to highlight that trend. The Student Diversity Council was created in late September by five students from the Office of Student Diversity. The five students who initially started the council were Vernon Wiley, senior in marketing; Tyrone Woodel, junior in nursing; Keenan Soles, senior in elementary education; Olujimi (Jimi) Sode, senior in biology; and Matt Shortino, senior in technology engineering education. “It’s been a goal of mine for a while now to organize a group of students for a cause like this,” Sode said. “In the past years I’ve attended here, I’ve…
Five years later
Students learn to use less on Sustainability Day Jen Rainey | Collegio Reporter The students and faculty of Pittsburg State have taken to heart the importance of sustainable practices and several organizations got together on Wednesday, Oct. 26, to inform students through various visual demonstrations. “Sustainability is important because it means you’re taking responsibility for the condition of the planet that you’re leaving to future generations,” said Jeanine Kunshek, junior in psychology and Spanish. “And you’re taking and using only what you need.” Members of the Student Government Association, Residence Hall Assembly and the Office of Analysis, Assessment and Planning, were involved in the event. “SGA ran a booth where students could stop by and…
Weede: bigger and better
Jay Benedict | Collegio Reporter This summer, Bleacher Report ranked Pittsburg State’s Carnie Smith Stadium as one of the Top 50 stadiums to see before you die and as one of the top 20 football atmospheres in the country. PSU was the only NCAA Division II school ranked on both lists and for good reason. Over the years, plenty of money, time and effort have been poured into “The Pitt” to ensure that it stays modern, pristine, and remains one of the best football facilities in Division II. Conversely, little has been done to upgrade the Weede Physical Education Building since it was built in 1971. “When the Weede was built, there were three or four…
A new social network?
Jay Benedict | Collegio Reporter Clinton Bell is on a crusade to change campus policy and the attitudes of students on campus. Bell’s efforts are directed towards changing the policy for bulletin board material, particularly the Student Government Association’s (SGA) regulation of campus bulletin boards. The current policy requires that a student or organization get their fliers approved and stamped by a member of SGA before they can post something on the boards. “It’s a violation of our freedom of speech,” said Bell, junior in psychology. “The bulletin boards should be open forums for students to communicate with each other.” Lara Ismert, academic affairs director, says the process isn’t that strict and any senator can be…
