The PSU golf team finished ninth in the 2011 MIAA Championships on Monday, April 18. The Gorillas were led by freshman Brett Dowell, who shot identical rounds of 78 at Tiffany Greens Golf Club in Kansas City, Mo. His total score of 156 put him in a tie for the 16th overall spot heading into Tuesday’s meet. “After the first day I was pretty happy with my performance,” Dowell said. “I had a few high numbers on a few holes, but other than those I played well.”Dowell says that the team just needs to be more consistent. “We just need to play better overall in order to compete in the tournaments next year,” Dowell said. “We’re a better team than what we showed this week.”
PSU earned scores of 326 and 321 after 36 holes of action to garner a total team score of 647, just behind eighth-place Lincoln, which led by one stroke.Central Missouri had a commanding 17-stroke lead in the two-day, 54-hole event and posted rounds of 295 and 298 to earn a total team score of 593. Washburn was in close at second place with a total score of 610.Next up for the Gorillas is a long off-season, when they hope to gain a few key players.
“I’d just like to say I think we’ll be better as a team next year because we have a few recruits coming in that can compete for top five,” Dowell said. “And hopefully all of us will improve over the summer.”
