Oscars hold special meaning for theater students

As the most famous faces in Hollywood walk the red carpet at the Academy Awards Sunday, Feb. 27, students involved with the theater program at Pittsburg State will have their own appreciation for what it means to win an Oscar.

“I feel more privileged to be an actor because of them, because I can look up to them,” said Joel Ybarra of this year’s Oscar nominees.

Ybarra, a senior in Communication and member of Alpha Psi Omega, the theater honor society, says he feels he can appreciate awards shows, such as the Oscars, more because of his acting experience.

“What an Oscar would mean to me is that I’d done a good job portraying my character,” Ybarra said.

Kristy Magee, graduate student in communication, is also involved in the theater program at PSU. She says receiving that kind of recognition is a huge achievement.

“You spend a lot of time and energy and effort putting a lot of emotion into a role,” Magee said. “I think that when you give a performance you’re especially proud of, it’s nice to recognized.”

Magee says that although recognition such as an Oscar or a Tony would be nice, an award doesn’t mean everything.

“If you can just reach someone in the audience and be proud of the performance you’ve given, then that should be enough,” Magee said.

Magee says she will be rooting for Annette Benning for her work in “The Kids Are All Right” at this year’s Academy Awards.

“I thought she was fantastic,” Magee said.

For Micah Black, freshman in political science and member of PSU’s theater program, an award such as an Oscar is the highest honor.

“That would be the highest praise for any actor,” Black said.

Black says she will be rooting for Helena Bonham Carter in the category of best supporting actress for her role in The King’s Speech.

The Oscars, which began in 1929, have not always been a highly publicized affair.

According to the Academy Awards’ website, the first awards banquet was held out of the public eye in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, with tickets ringing in at $5.

The Academy Awards quickly caught the public eye and, as of 2010, had 41 million viewers.

Actor James Franco and actress Anne Hathaway will host this year’s Academy Awards, as viewers tune in to see their favorite actors and films win the infamous golden Oscar statuette.

Frontrunners going into this Sunday’s awards show include the Facebook-themed movie, “The Social Network,” which has already won numerous awards, including four Golden Globes.

Actress Natalie Portman is also a favorite this awards season, having won a handful of awards already for her work in “The Black Swan.”

Colin Firth and his film, “The King’s Speech,” have also found success this awards season.

“I think it’s pretty much everyone’s dream to win an Oscar or a Tony,” Magee said.

The Academy Awards will be broadcast on ABC on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m.
