Taking the plunge Caitlin Taylor Collegio Reporter The 30th anniversary of the Polar Bear Plunge at the Crimson Villas pool started at noon on Saturday, Feb. 12, to raise money for the Special Olympics. Drawing in a large crowd, the Polar Bear Plunge started with Sgt. Bowman and two Special Olympic athletes, who brought the Special Olympic torch and recited the Special Olympic oath. Chris Moore, a police officer in Pittsburg, is a part of the Law Enforcement Torch Fund and is the regional coordinator for southeast Kansas. Jake Faber Sports Editor Last night, the Pittsburg State University women’s basketball team made the drive to Emporia, for its game against the Hornets, as scheduled, but there was one seat on the coach’s bench that wouldn’t be filled. Tisharria Huggins, a graduate assistant coach for the team, was killed Monday evening in a two-car accident on Highway 171 in Cherokee County. “My heart goes out to all those involved in last night’s accident,” President Steve Scott said in a statement released on Tuesday. “Losing a young woman as promising as Tisharria Huggins is a tragedy, and my deepest sympathies go out to her family and friends.
